William McKinley- De lome letter
This letter is written by the Spanish Ambassador, to the United States enrique Dupuy de Lome, insulting President William McKinley as weak and stupid politician.Cuban revolutionaries intercepted the letter and published it to the New York Journal. It was the worst insult to united states in its history-by Yellow Journalism. Shortly after this letter was published, the USS Maine exploded in Havana Harbor by killing officers and crew. The newspapers that were published accused Spain of blowing up the shop. President McKinley asked Congress for authority to use force against Spain to end fighting in Cuba.Publication of the letter helped generate public support for a war with Spain over the issue of independence for the Spanish colony of Cuba. This also shows de Lome's point of view about the Spanish involvement in Cuba and McKinley's diplomacy.
